Beautiful paintings by Teresa Kirk, showing her rhythmic, layering technique.

In a fun filled and very creative workshop called the  “Beauty of the Mark” we learned the mark making is unique to each of us. It is our language, our signature in painting. Be bold, allow the unexpected to happen.

Teresa advises artists to learn how to make their own unique marks. Play with design and textures and throw all your stuff in a sketch book. Google everything. She does everything in her sketchbooks, collage, Inktober, ripping up old paintings to play with new designs, etc. Artists should play every day and write in sketchbooks. The only limit is your imagination.

Teresa starts a painting by wetting the aquabord then marking with an Art Graf water-soluble graphite stick and sumi ink.
Next paint transparent watercolors on top of the marks.
Now she adds blue and white gouache in negative painting to create blocks of color in the background and carve out flower shapes.

Tips: Teresa likes Holbein Neutral Tint, a good, transparent paint. A good triad to use for grey is Peacock blue, Scarlet Lake red, and Burnt Sienna.

Tip: Use the free Home Depot or Lowes paint chips to try out colors in your paintings before committing. You can cut shapes to tweak a composition.
You can write under the painting or try other interesting effects, then paint another layer. Play!

If you want to use crayons and put lines into the painting, make sure there is already lines because it needs a friend.

Aquabord makes it easy to lift colors. Use a natural sponge and some water. When you store your paintings put a sheet of parchment in between.

Use white or beige masking tape to do straight lines. Or use a painters straight edge that you can buy at Home Depot.

We had 3 small Aquabords to PLAY with, together, make marks and add colors.
Set them up in different configurations…. horizontal or vertical. Wash all marks off and next day start again. Make it a morning workout!
Using tracing paper to work out composition is convenient.

Thank you Teresa Kirk for a wonderful, creative and fun workshop experience. We learned so much and experimented with new materials. At the end we discussed some quotes to think about:

“Mystery is at the heart of creativity. That, and surprise” – Julia Cameron

“We don’t stop playing because we row old, we grow old because we stop playing.” -George Bernard Shaw
