DAY 1 AND 2 – We started with the painting of the car in Europe. Cheryl is an abstract realist. She likes colors and geometry. She is a 4th generation artist. Whatever gets you to your goal is OK. Tip: Judges look for technical abilities, composition/design, and original point of view, in judging a painting in a show. Some need a “story” so a title is important. But Cheryl thinks a painting needs to stand on its own.

She tapes around her subjects instead of masking. Tapes give you a straight edge, so it’s good for architecture or lines. Successful paintings have a range of values 1-10.

We did the atomizer in a booth outside the classroom. When using the atomizer, also add newspaper to block areas to be protected. Pat Dews atomizer is recommended.

DAY 3 – Reflections of Zurich We started with a sketch that Cheryl gave us then transferred it onto 140# watercolor paper. Painted the face first mix skin tone with Opera and Aureolin. Tape around the face, when you have the eyes, nose, mouth and other details then tape over the face and paint in the sky using a mix of blues.
Use the tape to mask areas above the face paint in your own architecture shapes and lines.

TIPS: To fix a bleed under the tape use a Magic Eraser to lift out old color and apply new one. – She stores masking fluid in the refrigerator to keep it fresh for a long time. – She uses Clatoon Silicone brushes for masking fluid, found on Amazon.
Thank you Cheryl for an intense and fun workshop. We learned a lot of new tools and patience.
