"Herculaneum Home Commerce"
Watercolor, 2020

Herculaneum is the lesser known but very well-preserved city near Pompeii.  It was a more upscale town and as this painting shows, many "middle class” homes had commercial space in the front of their houses where produce or hand crafted were sold. Herculaneum was better preserved than Pompeii because Vesuvius' initial outpouring of debris and lava did severe damage to Pompeii while Herculaneum took a later blast consisting mostly of ash, which preserved victims and features from burning.

A photo taken by the artist during a visit to Sorrento, Italy, in 2016 was source for this painting.
